Why roof-terminated dryer vents behave differently

Does the vent need to be opened from the roof? Usually, yes. On a roof-terminated run, most of the debris sits in the last few feet, right under the jack. A brush pushed up from the laundry room tends to pack that plug tighter instead of clearing it. The duct turns vertical there. Lint falls back and stays. We work the run from both ends.

Houston builds this problem in. Many 1990s–2020s two-stories carry 20–40 ft attic runs with two to four elbows ending at a roof jack. Flex sags between joists. Condensate collects in the low spot. Lint then cements into a damp mat at the termination. Add dryer sheet residue and humidity and you get a varnish-like film that vacuuming alone will not lift.

The hardware matters as much as the duct. Flappers stick shut from pollen-bound lint. Some roof jacks ship with a screen, which does not belong on a dryer exhaust. Uncapped hoods pick up bird and wasp nests. Sheet metal screws inside joints snag lint and should be tape instead.

Pitch and roof height affect how the job gets done. Shingle condition matters too. Roof-terminated runs generally want attention every 6–9 months, sooner with a large family or pets.
