My dryer vent only runs a few feet out the side wall. Does a run that short need cleaning?

Yes, and short runs fool a lot of people here. Most South Houston laundry setups (garage corner, carport nook, or that narrow closet off the kitchen) push 4 to 8 feet straight out a side wall, so homeowners assume lint can't build up. It does, just at the ends: a tight packed plug right behind the dryer where the transition hose kinks against the wall, and another at the hood itself. Because these hoods sit low and close to grade, they also catch grass clippings, mulch, and whatever the mower throws. A short run with a blocked termination vents no better than a long one.

Exterior hoods in South Houston pick up a heavier particulate and soot load than homes further inland, and that film mixes with escaping lint to form a sticky crust on the flap and louvers. A flap that can't swing freely stays partly shut, airflow drops, and the dryer starts running cycle after cycle. We clean the hood from the outside as part of the job, not just the duct, and we check whether the flap still closes on its own when the dryer shuts off.

Foil flex ductwork and sheet-metal tape are still in a lot of these post-WWII frame and brick houses. Foil flex has ridges that grab lint, it sags between supports, and it crushes easily when a dryer gets pushed back against a utility closet wall. The tape dries out and lets the joint separate, so you end up venting lint into a garage or wall cavity. The other recurring problem is the low termination: grass clippings and mulch pulled up into the hood from grade level, sometimes with a wasp nest or a bird behind the flap.
