A lot of these 1950s–70s houses have laundry closets that are an inch or two too shallow for a modern dryer, so the flexible transition hose gets crushed or folded into an S behind the machine when the dryer is pushed back. Lint piles up at every kink. The wall run itself may only be five to ten feet and in decent shape, while the real restriction is the two feet you can't see. We pull the dryer, clean the full run, and set the transition so it has a gentle sweep instead of a fold. If there's not enough depth for that, a shorter rigid elbow or a periscope-style connector solves it.

I still have the original silver foil duct. Should it be replaced or can it just be cleaned?

We see a lot of original foil flex in this area, both in closets and running through garage walls. It can be cleaned, but foil is thin, the ribbing catches lint, and once it's been compressed behind an appliance for decades it tends to tear or collapse rather than spring back. We clean it and show you what it looks like inside. If it's torn, sagging, or the ribs have packed solid, replacing that section with smooth rigid metal is worth doing, and on a run this short it's not a big job. Foil inside a wall or above a ceiling is a different situation, since getting at it is harder.

A hood that looks grimy isn't automatically blocked, but check that the flaps still swing freely. If the flaps are stuck shut or the previous owner left a pest screen in place, that alone will back up the whole run.

The bigger factor is if a previous owner moved the laundry and ran new duct up into the attic. These are low-pitch attics with little crawl height, so reaching a rerouted run can take longer than the cleaning itself. In the meantime, unplug or shut off the dryer if you smell anything hot, and don't keep running cycles to force the load dry. That's exactly the condition that overheats the machine.
